Child abuse squad detectives were notified after the baby was taken to Wagga Wagga Base Hospital in a critical condition on July 27, 2023.Police said the boy was taken to the hospital by the accused, then transferred to Sydney Children's Hospital where he died on July 31.Detective Inspector Peter Owen from the State Crime Command's child abuse squad said the boy had a critical illness and non-accidental injuries. "I can tell you the child had numerous broken bones throughout his body and some other injuries," he said."The death of an infant is tragic."Suspected inflicted injuries is another level that is abhorrent to people."Detectives attached to the child abuse squad established Strike Force Wighton to investigate the infant's death.Officers arrested the 26-year-old in Albury, on the NSW-Victoria border, on Friday morning.Man 'not well known to police'Detective Inspector Owen said the Wagga Wagga man was in Albury visiting other children.He said he was "not adversely known to police".Detective Inspector Peter Owen says the baby boy had significant injuries to his body. (ABC Goulburn Murray: Annie Brown)"(There was) no history of domestic violence and there were no protective orders in place at the time of the incident," Detective Inspector Owen said.Police said the baby boy had two other siblings who were safe and well.The man was taken to Albury police station where he was charged with domestic violence-related manslaughter.
