(PTI File)Northwest India, including parts of Jammu and Kashmir, is set to get the much-needed respite from the intense summer with a fresh spell of rain around during May 1-5, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted. In the aftermath of disastrous rains, flash floods and landslides in Ramban, the temperatures in many parts of Jammu and Kashmir region have been five-six degrees above-normal, even in hill stations of Pahalgam, which saw a terrorist attack on April 22, and Gulmarg.related storiesThe tension-fraught region saw mercury settling way above-normal over many parts as well as Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad, with heatwave conditions prevailing in Jammu where the temperatures have touched 40.6℃, and likely to remain so till April 30.Amid dry weather and occasional clouds, the mercury soared to 38℃ in Muzaffarabad (Kashmir) and 40.6℃ at Mirpur (Jammu) on Monday. Even the night-time temperature was above-normal, dipping to the lowest at Pahalgam (Kashmir) at 4.4℃ and 10.7℃ in Bhaderwah (Jammu). Srinagar recorded 28.8℃, which was 5.7 degrees above-normal, while it remained 9.4℃ in the night – nearly 9.5 degrees above-normal.Meteorologists, however, highlight that Northwest India, including the Himalayan states, have escaped the brutal impact of prolonged heatwaves this April due to successive western disturbances, even as temperatures soared past 42℃ across many central and western states.FRESH WESTERN DISTURBANCE AROUND MAY 1According to the forecast, the incoming western disturbance is likely to impact the western Himalayan around May 2 and bring light to moderate rain over the region. Jammu and Kashmir, which has borne the brunt of extreme weather this month, is likely to experience more rains and thunderstorm, but according to forecasters, the intensity is likely to be ‘light to moderate’, with a slight chance of snow in the upper reaches. There are also predictions of lightning and strong winds reaching 30-50 kmph during this period in parts of Ladakh, Gilgit, Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. The forecast comes just as the region is recovering from a disastrous spell of intense rain around April 18-20, which triggered massive landslides, and flash floods which washed away houses, roads, and left a trail of destruction in Jammu’s Ramban district.RESPITE FROM PROLONGED HEAT WAVES THIS APRILAccording to MeT, scattered rainfall with thunderstorm, lightning and strong winds reaching 60kmph is also expected over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi, Uttar Pradesh till May 4. Some parts may just experience dust storms. With this, the heatwaves prevailing in parts of Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan and Saurashtra-Kutch in Gujarat are also likely to abate this week, as temperatures may fall by at least two-four degrees.“Heatwaves have made on and off appearance over the north western plains, because of the increased frequency of western disturbances, which has been affecting the flow of dry and hot north-westerly winds. Parts of Central and West India, too, have not seen prolonged heat wave spells in the season so far," said Mahesh Palawat, Vice President – Meteorology and Climate Change, Skymet Weather.top videosView allSwipe Left For Next VideoView allTemperatures have been in the range of 42-46℃ over Rajasthan, Gujarat, West Madhya Pradesh, Marathwada and Vidarbha, peaking at 46.4℃ in Barmer (West Rajasthan) on Monday. However, maximum and minimum temperatures over Delhi are still hovering around 39 to 40°C and 23 to 24°C respectively.Senior scientist Dr K J Ramesh, former DG IMD, highlighted that the frequency of western disturbances has increased after remaining insignificant till late January and has been affecting Western Himalayas at regular intervals so far. But he also warned of the subsequent impacts of climate change on these extra-tropical storms. “The influence of Western Disturbances has been growing significantly over Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, and they are dumping more rainfall over the Himalayan region," he added.Get breaking news, in-depth analysis, and expert perspectives on everything from politics to crime and society.
