Queensland Premier David Crisafulli says LNP has 'soul searching' to do after Labor landslideRBy Rachel StewartTopic:State and Territory Government1h ago1 hours agoMon 5 May 2025 at 4:58amLoading...abc.net.au/news/qld-federal-election-david-crisafulli-albanese-cannoli/105252266Link copiedShareShare articleQueensland Premier David Crisafulli says the Coalition has "soul searching" to do after a bruising federal election result.Labor was re-elected to government with an increased majority at the weekend, with the party on track to hold at least 12 of Queensland's 30 federal seats. The ALP held just five seats in the Sunshine State — traditionally an LNP stronghold — before the election.Opposition Leader Peter Dutton also lost his marginal seat of Dickson in Brisbane's outer north to Labor's third-time candidate Ali France.Newly elected member for Dickson Ali France of Labor (middle) at the Brisbane Labour Day march. (AAP: Jono Searle)Mr Crisafulli — who led the LNP to victory at the Queensland state election last October — wouldn't be drawn on where Peter Dutton and the Coalition "went wrong"."There will be others who do a post-mortem on that," he said."What I've done in the last couple of days is that I've spoken to the prime minister, and I've spoken to Mr Dutton, because in the end elections are always a contest and they're always bruising."At the moment the federal Liberal and National parties have got soul searching to do, that's part of the democratic process."Anthony Albanese and David Crisafulli announced a new funding deal for state schools last year. (ABC News: Matt Roberts)Mr Crisafulli also defended not appearing with Mr Dutton during the federal election campaign, saying he "was involved"."I helped launched Peter's campaign at the start of the year and on polling day I was even in his seat," he said. "I've made no secret of the fact of how close I am to Peter. I think Peter made an amazing contribution to the country."I think he's one of the best defence ministers the country's ever seen and he's a big loss to the parliament."Keep sports minister a QueenslanderThe premier said in his first six months in office he'd worked well with the Albanese government and was hopeful the federal sport minister would remain from Queensland, as the ALP considers a post-election cabinet reshuffle."The way we've worked together on the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, we've got a plan to deliver that," he said."I'm not picking Mr Albanese's cabinet, but we do like the fact the sports minister is a Queenslander."In the end we'll work in good faith."Anika Wells, who again won her seat of Lilley in Brisbane's northern suburbs, was sport minister in the last federal term. Anika Wells was sports minister in the first Albanese government. (ABC News: Adam Kennedy)Mr Crisafulli said it would be "rude not to" give Mr Albanese a celebratory cannoli if he comes to Queensland after he gave the prime minister the Italian dessert earlier this year ahead of announcing a shared education funding deal. How to (maybe not) fund an Olympic GamesPhoto shows An illustration of a large stadium in a green park near the CBD.There's a mixed history of private investment in sporting infrastructure. One thing is sure, those investing in sporting assets want to see returns that compensate the risk involved, writes Liam Walsh.Speaking ahead of Brisbane's Labor Day march, Ms Wells said it was a "privilege" to serve in her portfolios."Obviously Brisbane 2032 is our north star, it's the zenith we're all working towards," she said.At least seven Labor MPs from Queensland are expected to join Labor's ranks in Canberra.Asked if more Queensland MPs should be in elevated to Albanese's ministry, Federal Treasurer Jim Chalmers and Rankin MP said the party can "never have too many Queenslanders"."For too long now Queensland has been long on influence but short on numbers in the federal parliamentary Labor Party," he said."Now we are long on influence and longer on numbers so that's a very good thing, and we hope to see that represented in the decision making of the government going forward."Nationals divided over LittleproudMeanwhile, some Queensland Nationals MPs remain divided about the future of their party leader David Littleproud.Flynn MP Colin Boyce told the ABC yesterday Mr Littleproud's "position as leader is untenable" and partly blamed him for the Coalition's poor result. Michelle Landry says she backs David Littleproud to stay on as leader. (ABC News: Matt Roberts)Nationals MP for Capricornia Michelle Landry said while the LNP "didn't sell its message well enough" during the campaign, she backed Mr Littleproud staying on."I think David's done a fantastic job," she said."He's been all over the countryside, we've retained every seat in the federal Nationals and could be winning two more."A party room meeting will be held in the coming weeks.Posted 1h ago1 hours agoMon 5 May 2025 at 4:58am, updated 10m ago10 minutes agoMon 5 May 2025 at 6:04amShare optionsCopy linkFacebookX (formerly Twitter)Top StoriesLiberals closing gap in Goldstein, Bradfield as postal votes favour CoalitionLIVEPhoto shows Zoe Daniel looks into the distance at a press conference at Parliament HouseAlbanese says he received 'very warm' phone call from Donald TrumpTopic:Foreign AffairsPhoto shows a middle-aged man wearing glasses pointing'Laughable policies': Voters explain what went wrong for CoalitionTopic:ElectionsPhoto shows A young coupleNationals MPs '100 per cent' back nuclear being kept as Coalition dissects lossTopic:Federal GovernmentPhoto shows A man in a shirt and hat.Albanese to 'slow the pace' as factions jostle over cabinet reshuffleTopic:Federal GovernmentPhoto shows Albanese, at a press conference, raises his hands while speaking.Popular nowLiberals closing gap in Goldstein, Bradfield as postal votes favour CoalitionLIVEPhoto shows Zoe Daniel looks into the distance at a press conference at Parliament HouseJacqui Lambie battling Pauline Hanson's daughter Lee for Senate spotTopic:ElectionsPhoto shows A woman with blonde hair in a composite with a woman with brunette hair.Erin Patterson told online friends of 'controlling' marriage, court hearsLIVEPhoto shows A digital drawing of Erin Patterson wearing a pink shirtRelated topicsALPAustralian Federal ElectionsBrisbaneElectionsLiberal National Party of QueenslandState and Territory GovernmentTop StoriesLiberals closing gap in Goldstein, Bradfield as postal votes favour CoalitionTopic:Australian Federal ElectionsPhoto shows Zoe Daniel looks into the distance at a press conference at Parliament HouseAlbanese says he received 'very warm' phone call from Donald TrumpTopic:Foreign Affairs'Laughable policies': Voters explain what went wrong for CoalitionTopic:ElectionsNationals MPs '100 per cent' back nuclear being kept as Coalition dissects lossTopic:Federal GovernmentAlbanese to 'slow the pace' as factions jostle over cabinet reshuffleTopic:Federal GovernmentJust InWhat moving to a rural town for love is really likeTopic:Perspective13m ago13 minutes agoMon 5 May 2025 at 6:00amTeal MP Zoe Daniel's high-profile seat is just one of 16 still in doubtTopic:Explainer14m ago14 minutes agoMon 5 May 2025 at 5:59amForeign gold miner beefs up takeover offer for WA partner to $3.7bTopic:Gold20m ago20 minutes agoMon 5 May 2025 at 5:53amPhilippine president's reported half-sister fined over conduct on Jetstar flightTopic:Courts31m ago31 minutes agoMon 5 May 2025 at 5:42amMore Just InBack to top
