(ABC News)'An absolute tragedy'Detective Sergeant Mark Amos warned "just a moment of inattention" could be life-changing."It's just an absolute tragedy that we've got the loss of a life, a wife, a mother — on Mother's Day — is killed in a crash that just should never ever have occurred," Sergeant Amos said.Police believe one of the vehicles failed to stop at a stop sign. (ABC News)"Someone is going to have to explain to this lady's family, her children, why this happened, and believe me that is no easy task," Sergeant Amos said."They've been there when they've lost their mum, on the worst possible day."The driver of the second vehicle suffered minor injuries, while a passenger was seriously hurt and remained in hospital.Investigations continued into the collision.Authorities believe the woman's husband was driving at the time of the crash. (ABC News)String of fatalities as National Road Safety Week beginsSix other people have also died in separate crashes across the state.A 66-year-old pedestrian from Kinglake has died in hospital after being hit by a car on Geelong Street in West Footscray on Monday morning.The driver of the vehicle, a 76-year-old Seddon man, stopped at the scene and is assisting police with their enquiries.The drivers of two vehicles were both killed when they collided in Clayton South on Monday. (ABC News: Rudy De Santis)On Monday about 6am, police were called to a head-on collision in Clayton South, in Melbourne's south-east.A 46-year-old Springvale South man and a 52-year-old Scoresby woman, who were the drivers and only people in each vehicle, were declared dead at the scene.Also on Monday, a 26-year-old man was found dead in his car following a crash in Swan Hill West near the Victoria-NSW border. Police believed the man, from the Buloke area, lost control of the car while travelling on Sea Lake-Swan Hill Road.On Sunday, two vehicles collided in Pootilla near Ballarat, with one of the drivers dying at the scene.Victorian road deaths have risen this year when compared to last year. (ABC News: Rudy De Santis)On Saturday, a 53-year-old man was killed after his motorbike collided with a car in Moutajup in Victoria's west, with a passenger flown to hospital with life-threatening injuries.It comes as National Road Safety Week begins, with police scheduled to boost their presence on the roads and crack down on speeding drivers.Sergeant Amos said urged Victorians to drive safely to prevent further tragedy."Pay attention, be alert, slow down, concentrate," he said."Without doing that, you're going to lose somebody.
