Every day, the average Indian household generates between 500 grams to one kilogram of kitchen waste. Peelings, leftovers, and other organic scraps pile up relentlessly, most of which either end up in landfills or are composted by the environmentally conscious.
However, even in homes that practise composting, the full potential of this organic waste often goes untapped. While composting is undoubtedly an excellent way to manage kitchen scraps, did you know your food waste could do even more?

Beyond enriching the soil, it can be transformed into clean, renewable energy — biogas — which you can use to cook your daily meals.
An urban-friendly solution
Enter the Gastoday Domestic Biogas unit, a compact system developed to help urban households put their food waste to better use. Created by the Tamil Nadu-based startup Green Connect, the unit fits into tight spaces like balconies or terraces and is designed to convert everyday kitchen scraps into cooking fuel through a simple, natural process. With a footprint of just four feet by four feet, it makes clean energy possible even in flats with limited outdoor space.

The Gastoday unit is ingeniously designed. It features a food waste digester tank that processes organic matter and generates methane-rich biogas through anaerobic digestion — a natural biological process. The output is a clean-burning gas that can fuel your stove.
Get biogas from kitchen waste
All you need to do is feed the system your kitchen waste, and it does the rest. On average, two kilograms of waste can generate approximately 200 litres of biogas and four litres of organic manure — enough to cook for around 30 minutes. The system is available in multiple sizes, supporting up to 50 kilograms of waste input based on household needs.
As a bonus, the unit produces nutrient-rich slurry as a by-product, which can be used as a natural fertiliser for plants.

Affordable, easy, and sustainable
Priced starting at Rs 21,000, the Gastoday unit offers all the benefits of a traditional biogas plant with a fraction of the space requirements. It can be installed on a balcony, terrace, or any small outdoor area — making clean energy accessible even in dense urban setups.
What makes Gastoday especially appealing is its low-maintenance, electricity-free operation. Built to be durable, it works entirely through natural processes, making it both eco-friendly and cost-effective in the long run.

The woman behind the innovation
At the heart of this innovation is Ms. Harini Ravi Kumar, the founder of Green Connect. Operating from Salem, Tamil Nadu, Harini established the company in 2012 with a vision to provide sustainable waste management solutions tailored for Indian households. Under her leadership, Green Connect has installed over 1,000 biogas plants across the country, transforming organic waste into valuable energy and promoting environmental stewardship.
In a world where sustainable living is no longer optional, innovations like this offer practical, powerful ways to reduce household carbon footprints. Organic waste that would otherwise rot in landfills — releasing methane, a potent greenhouse gas — is instead converted into clean fuel and fertiliser.
