"The Movie Industry in America is DYING a very fast death," he wrote. He called out other countries offering incentives to draw screen production to their shores. In Australia, a 30 per cent location offset is offered by the federal government, as well as a 30 per cent offset for post, digital and visual effects production. Many state governments also offer their own offsets. In 2023-24, foreign film and television productions accounted for $768 million in screen expenditure in Australia.Recent American productions to shoot in Australia include The Mongoose, starring Liam Neeson, and Liane Moriarty adaptation Apples Never Fall. Trump described the "concerted effort" of other countries to attract American film production to their shores as a "National Security threat ... messaging and propaganda". "WE WANT MOVIES MADE IN AMERICA, AGAIN!" he wrote. He added that the Department of Commerce and the United States Trade Representative have already been authorised to begin the process of instituting the tariffs. They follow the implementation of 10 per cent tariffs on imports from other countries, including Australia, with a 125 per cent tariff on goods from China.
