(Representative/PTI) The Quick Action Team (QAT) of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) commandos was the first to respond to the horrific terror attack in J&K’s Pahalgam, which killed 26 individuals, mostly tourists.Earlier, some reports suggested that the Jammu and Kashmir police were the first to arrive at the scene. However, on Saturday, officials clarified that the QAT was the first to reach the spot alerted by a pony rider.related storiesAfter reaching Baisaran, the QAT team found numerous tourists and three individuals who had sustained bullet wounds, officials said.The Delta Company base camp of CRPF’s 116 battalion is the nearest security camp, located approximately four to five kilometres from Baisaran. Rajesh Kumar, the Commanding Officer (CO) of the CRPF battalion, was reportedly leaving the camp when he noticed several pony riders and tourists descending rapidly from a higher altitude. Kumar stopped them and inquired about the situation.According to the officials, the pony riders informed Kumar, “Sir, something has happened in Baisaran above…maybe shots have been fired."Kumar promptly alerted his nearby QAT, and a team of around 25 commandos traversed the muddy and rocky path, reaching the location in 40-45 minutes. Officials said that the soldiers exercised caution during their ascent, anticipating possible terrorist fire or grenade attacks.Meanwhile, the local CRPF unit had established checkpoints around Pahalgam town and bolstered security near the incident site.Assistant Commandant Rashi Sikarwar, Company Commander of Delta Unit, joined the team, and the CO tasked her with attending to women and children, many of whom were injured.By the time the CRPF unit arrived in Baisaran around 2:30 pm on the fateful day, they found three people with gunshot wounds and others, including women and children, hiding in various places. The CRPF team rescued the injured and conducted a brief search for the attackers.By then, the local station in-charge of the Jammu and Kashmir Police had reached the scene, and both forces began efforts to control the situation.Officials reported that bodies were scattered all over the meadow, with one near the gate of the grass field and three or four piled at one spot. One of the injured succumbed to their injuries, while the others were admitted to a nearby government hospital.Officials stated that about 30 to 40 tourists were sheltered in the Delta Company mess area, where they received food and water. A senior security official mentioned that all units of the CRPF Delta Company, including the local police, were deployed in the area, with only one platoon (about 22 to 24 personnel) stationed at the base camp.
