copiedShareShare articleA serial groper who sexually assaulted 17 women and attempted to sexually assault another at a Melbourne nightclub has avoided jail time.David Maria Anthony Rayan, 34, was facing up to 10 years in prison for the sexual assaults, which took place at Revolver nightclub on Chapel Street, Prahran, over three nights in late-2023.Mr Rayan pleaded guilty to the charges and today received a two-year community corrections order in the Victorian County Court. The sentencing began with the reading of an additional impact statement from one of the women assaulted. The woman recounted how she was left feeling fearful of going out, of men, and has had to relocate from Melbourne to Queensland, where she had better supports."I haven't been able to maintain any relationships since the assault," she said."This experience has changed me in ways I am still dealing with today."The community corrections order, handed down by Judge Peter Rozen, placed Mr Rayan under supervision, required him to complete 180 hours of unpaid community work, and attend programs for alcohol abuse and to combat reoffending. It also required Mr Rayan not to leave Victoria without permission, and to notify Corrections Victoria should he move house or change jobs.Rayan sexually assaulted numerous womenThe court heard Mr Rayan had attended Revolver nightclub on his own on the nights of his offending.During the sentencing, Judge Rozen recounted Mr Rayan's actions while in the club, which involved repeatedly touching women's buttocks and waists, often in front of their partners, kissing their shoulders, and making other unwanted advances.Sexual assault support lines:1800 Respect National Helpline: 1800 737 732Lifeline (24-hour crisis line): 131 114Full Stop October 14 and October 21, 2023.It often took place over a few hours and was against women aged between 18 and 48.The court was told Mr Rayan's attendance at the nightclub followed his marriage breaking down and he no longer sees his infant daughter.Three additional women had submitted impact statements, which also spoke of fear of going out, and concern about Mr Rayan being in the community.Judge Rozen said the scale of Mr Rayan's offending was "most concerning".He said contributing to the decision not to hand down a custodial sentence was the fact that the inappropriate touches had all been above the clothes, and the victims were unknown to Mr Rayan.Mr Rayan had been assessed by both an independent psychologist and Corrections Victoria, who had judged his risk of reoffending to be low.The judge agreed, and said Mr Rayan's prospect for rehabilitation was "fair".He noted concern about Mr Rayan's "lack of insight" into the reason for his offending and the "brazen nature" of his assaults.Mr Rayan only spoke once during the sentencing, to agree to the community corrections order."Yes, I do your honour" he said.Judge Rozen said Mr Rayan's decision to plead guilty had been a factor in his non-custodial sentence, and that if he had not, he would likely have handed down a six-month jail term.Posted 6m ago6 minutes agoMon 5 May 2025 at 4:05amShare optionsCopy
