And maybe pin it to the top?- Bronwyn Hey Bronwyn, thank you for your question. We haven't forgotten about the Senate.Senate votes take longer to count because they are often larger, more complex ballots and require candidates to meet a quota. At this stage, the ABC projects Labor will win 12 seats in the upper house. It's likely they'll also pick up another four. Those gains are likely to come from NSW, Victoria, SA and WA, where Labor is on track to win at least three Senate seats in those states. This would increase Labor's representation in the Senate to 28 seats. On the other side of the isle, the ABC projects the Coalition will win 6 seats, and is ahead in another 6 seats. This would bring the Coalition's total representation in the Senate to 26 seats. The final senate seat in each state is usually decided by preferences so it will take a while longer until we get a clearer idea about who will win.You can take a closer look at the Senate results, including a state by state breakdown, right here.ReactReactCopy link15m agoSat 3 May 2025 at 10:09pmACOSS says new govt chance at restoring social harmonyHBy Heloise VyasChief of the Australian Council of Social Service (ACOSS) Cassandra Goldie is critical in her assessment of the Coalition's characterisation of immigrants in its discourse around housing, as well as its approach to Indigenous issues."We were very concerned by the way that some of the policies that the Coalition was running were really trying to scapegoat migrant communities for our housing crisis when our housing crisis needs to be dealt with by fixing tax policies, by investing in more social housing and lifting up the incomes of people," she tells ABC News from Melbourne."The efforts to [scale back] the Welcome to Country … We should be proud of the fact that we have an extraordinary First Nations community. They have been very brave in this election."We have a second [Labor] term now and we want to see really bold action to back our newly arrived communities, to ensure that First Nations people absolutely have self-determination, and we do some of that truth-telling."We've got a real chance now, I think, to change this nation in a way that so many of us want it to be. Patricia Karvelas and Jacob Greber break it all down on Politics Now.PK says the result is an "unmitigated disaster" for the Liberal Party and comes on the back of a horrendous campaign."This is worse than their bad day scenario. And their entire strategy — the outer suburban seats, the mortgage belt seats — absolutely collapsed for the Coalition."Jacob Greber agrees and points out that Peter Dutton was "toxic" for the Coalition."I think most critically for Liberals, Peter Dutton did not give them anything to vote for. He was a Liberal leader promising to raise income taxes, a Liberal leader doing market intervention in the gas market, a Liberal leader promising bigger deficits than Labor. (Reuters: Nathan Howard)In a statement released by the US State Department, Rubio said the United States looked forward to deepening the bilateral relationship."The United States looks forward to deepening its relationship with Australia to advance our common interests and promote freedom and stability in the Indo-Pacific and globally," Rubio said.Of course, the Trump administration has played a major role in setting the tone of this year's campaign.Reporting with ReutersReactReactCopy link51m agoSat 3 May 2025 at 9:33pmLiberals' crushing defeat speaks to its 'directional' challengeHBy Heloise VyasNational political lead David Speers says there's two big stories emerging from this year's election. For Labor, the victory is historic in more ways than one."This is a landslide win. First-term governments - Labor or coalition - normally go backwards at their next election. This one has surged forwards," he says.Labor gains through the country, including in the historically Coalition-dominated state of Queensland, gives the party "far more legitimacy" than simply defeating the Morrison government in 2022, Speers says."This is an embrace of Anthony Albanese's agenda."For the Coalition, he says the defeat should bring about fundamental reflection."I think it's more that just about losing their leader, more than a debate about whether they kept policies too late and so on."It's a directional question."Does the Liberal Party have the right direction? Does it have the vision that the Australian people are going to embrace? And right now you're going to have to say, no."ReactReactCopy linkKey Event54m agoSat 3 May 2025 at 9:31pmIt’s the question on everyone’s lips: who steps up for the Coalition now?OBy Olivia CaisleyAfter an electoral wipeout, the Coalition has been left leaderless and reeling.Peter Dutton's shock loss in the seat of Dickson wasn't just a blow — it's left the party in freefall, with no obvious successor and no clear direction. In truth, the leadership race had already begun before the final votes were even tallied. Frontbenchers were lining up meetings before midnight — a sign perhaps for some this was less of a surprise. There'll be more informal talks today, but make no mistake: the jostling is already well underway.Dutton's hold on the leadership was always shaky. He needed to pick up at least 10 seats to shore up his position — a watermark insiders say he never really looked like hitting. Even if he'd clung on to Dickson, his job was on the line. Now, the names being floated include Angus Taylor, Andrew Hastie, Dan Tehan and Sussan Ley — but there's no heir apparent and no consensus about who should step in and steady the ship. And that's the real issue. With the dust still settling, the Coalition isn't just choosing a new leader. It's staring down something much harder: a full-blown identity crisis. What kind of party does it want to be in opposition? What — and who — is it actually for?The answers won't come quickly. But one thing's already clear: rebuilding starts with more than a new face. It starts with a reckoning.ReactReactCopy link56m agoSat 3 May 2025 at 9:28pmLabor win, Rabbitohs loseCBy Carly CookHunter Labor MP Dan Repacholi said he couldn't wait to call Anthony Albanese and congratulate him on his re-election, but also to rub in that the Newcastle Knights beat the PM’s favoured NRL team the South Sydney Rabbitohs on Saturday.“He will not hear the end of this. (ABC News: Laurence Curson)Repacholi, who has been re-elected for a second term, said the election results show Peter Dutton’s nuclear policy didn’t sit well with people in the Hunter.“There’s been a massive conversation here ever since Peter Dutton and his team announced a policy that was written on the back of a beer coaster,” he said.“What this really says is they need to have a hard look at their policies because a five page policy document on nuclear power in this country is clearly not good enough.” ReactReactCopy link1h agoSat 3 May 2025 at 9:24pmWA Liberal leader says party 'not relevant enough'CBy Courtney WithersNewly elected WA Liberal Leader Basil Zempilas has given a sober assessment of his federal colleagues' performance."This has to be a learning opportunity for the Liberal Party, and it has to be an opportunity to find a way to connect with more of the Australian public," Zempilas said speaking about the national result for the Liberals.Basil Zempilas at the Liberals election event for Curtin (ABC News: Courtney Withers)"Because at the moment, the Liberal Party is not relevant to enough of the Australian population, it's as simple as that."ReactReactCopy link1h agoSat 3 May 2025 at 9:17pmJoe Biden congratulates Anthony AlbaneseJBy Joshua BoscainiA short time ago, former US president Joe Biden congratulated Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on social media for his election win."America and Australia have a vibrant alliance anchored in shared values and I know that Anthony will continue to stand for them," Biden says.Loading Twitter contentReactReactCopy linkKey Event1h agoSat 3 May 2025 at 9:10pmZelenskyy leads global reaction to Labor landslideTBy Thomas MorganWorld leaders have congratulated Anthony Albanese and Labor on their election victory overnight. In a post on X, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy wished Albanese "continued success in serving the people of Australia and delivering meaningful achievements".Loading Twitter contentNew Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon said the country has "no better friend and no greater ally than Australia".Loading Twitter contentEarlier, UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer congratulated Albanese and said he looked forward to delivering "a brighter future for working people in both of our countries".Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Mr Albanese had an "emphatic mandate".Loading Twitter contentReactReactCopy linkKey Event1h agoSat 3 May 2025 at 9:06pmLet's take a look at where things currently standJBy Joshua BoscainiAustralia's electoral map has changed over the past few hours so let's take a look at some of the movements that have occurred and the current state of play. The ABC projects Labor has gained the following seats.
