The rise of web search in AI tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot may make users less inclined to visit Google as their primary way of finding information.Google currently pays Apple around $20 billion to make its search engine the default in Safari, and a decrease in searches could mean less money for Apple. “I’ve lost a lot of sleep thinking about it,” Cue said, when considering what Apple would do without revenue from Google Search. As Google and other companies continue to embrace AI, traffic to websites that would normally receive clicks from search results is falling, dealing a huge blow to some businesses. In response to concerns from independent site owners, Google Search vice president Pandu Nayak said he can’t offer “any guarantees” that things will turn around. The Verge reached out to Google with a request for comment but didn’t immediately hear back.See More: AppleGoogleNewsTechMore in this streamSee allApple’s Eddy Cue: ‘You may not need an iPhone 10 years from now’Wes Davis and Lauren Feiner12 minutes agoCommentsComment Icon BubbleApple is looking at adding Perplexity and other AI search engines to SafariEmma Roth and Lauren FeinerTwo hours agoCommentsComment Icon BubbleDOJ’s proposed Google changes would ‘deeply undermine user trust,’ search chief saysLauren FeinerMay 6CommentsComment Icon BubbleMost PopularMost PopularSonos and Ikea are ending their partnershipThe new flying ID restrictions are here, and they’re a messMicrosoft and Asus’ Xbox handheld appears in leaked photosDeath is the policyGoogle just leaked Android’s new design languageInstallerA weekly newsletter by David Pierce designed to tell you everything you need to download, watch, read, listen to, and explore that fits in The Verge’s universe.Email (required)Sign UpBy submitting your email, you agree to our Terms and Privacy Notice.
