(AAP: Dan Himbrechts)History of violenceMs Acret said an appeal was warranted as Thompson was a violent man who had breached an apprehended domestic violence order (ADVO) in place to protect her daughter eight times.Sentencing judge Richard Weinstein also noted the history of violence in his judgement.He said Thompson had stalking and intimidating offences from 2017.His history of contravening ADVOs dates to 2021.Tyrone Thompson killed MacKenzie Anderson in 2022. (Supplied: Facebook)The court was also told he had assaulted prison officials in the Goulburn "super-max" Correctional Centre on four occasions in 2023.Vigil for victimsMs Acret's meeting coincided with a vigil in Newcastle where dozens of people rallied for people who had lost their lives to family violence.Thompson's sentence was a focus of the vigil.Dozens of women attended a twilight vigil at Gregson Park in Newcastle. I might not be here to share my story," she said.The Newcastle community paid respect at Gregson Park to the lives lost to domestic violence this year. (ABC Newcastle: Nakita Jager) Paige said she came to the vigil to remember Mackenzie and others who had died."That sentence came out and I don't think there was a single person that wasn't shocked by the results of that," she said.Sentence 'leaves women feeling helpless'Feminist activist and speaker at the vigil, Rachel Bond, said change was needed in the criminal justice system to prioritise women's safety."It is frustrating to see the lack of change after a decade," she said.Ms Bond said Thompson's sentence had left women feeling helpless.She said ADVO breaches should have immediate consequences to keep women safe."What men are learning is that it's just a piece of paper, it's not going to keep the women safe," she said.The Newcastle community reflected on the lives that have been lost to domestic violence.
