(Reuters: Shannon Stapleton)abc.net.au/news/usa-ukraine-russia-invasion-reconstruction-deal/105236892Link copiedShareShare articleThe US and Ukraine have signed a "reconstruction" agreement, two months after a wartime deal was shelved when the countries' leaders spectacularly clashed at the White House.The two nations have for months been discussing a deal that would see the US develop, and profit from, Ukraine's critical minerals deposits. US President Donald Trump had previously described that deal as a way for Ukraine to pay back the US for the billions of dollars in military aid it has provided since Russia's 2022 invasion.The new deal will establish an investment fund to finance Ukraine's reconstruction and "ensure that our mutual assets, talents, and capabilities can accelerate Ukraine’s economic recovery".It is not clear how closely this deal resembles the agreement Mr Trump and Ukrainian President Volodomyr Zelenskyy were set to sign before the infamous Oval Office showdown in February.In a statement, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said: "This agreement signals clearly to Russia that the Trump Administration is committed to a peace process centered on a free, sovereign, and prosperous Ukraine over the long term. "President Trump envisioned this partnership between the American people and the Ukrainian people to show both sides' commitment to lasting peace and prosperity in Ukraine.
